Gerhard was one of this century's major composers, and his Third Symphony is one of the first and most successful works to incorporate electronic sounds into a live orchestral context. It's very difficult to describe exactly what this music sounds like--it's not tonal, certainly, but it's also very attractive as pure sound, and there are recurring ideas ("gestures" or "structures" may best describe them) that unify the musical argument. To that extent, the music is certainly "difficult," but it would be wrong to assume that it's difficulty is a function of some fiendish complexity designed to mystify the listener. In fact, all of Gerhard's music is directly communicative and highly expressive, so if you've got some time and a sense of adventure, you may want to give it a shot. --David Hurwitz

Horacio... honestly, it's more than good to listen to Gerhard. I've come to live with his music many times each week. Why? Like Mahler, like Shostakovich and many of the best, he knows more than his own life: he knows life in this world. That you share so much of his work is more than great. To everyone who lives in Horacio's community here... I do write opera librettos. You'll be more than happy to find Gerhard's opera, "La Duena". It is in English and, yes, he often lived there. But it is as great as any Tchaikovsky and even Rimsky-Korsakov opera. To give all of us such more than rewarding composers and their performing artists... and to introduce us to ones we may have or not heard on a radio or in a concert... well, you are a deeply great friend. It was posted there, sometime ago. A lot of the Chandos English Operas can be found online at Amazon... and the used versions have been (for me) in truly good conditions. That's where I got this and others recently. Of course, those operas are available for downloads at Chandos' The Classical Shop. What's surprising given their prices is that many of their operas are inexpensive!
