La Sonata Argentina features the Celestino Piaggio sonata plus four contemporary compositions. Sonata by Carlos Suffern (1901-1991) is capricious in mood but virtuoso in execution. Cuarta Sonata by Roberto Garcia Morillo (1911-2003) is percussive and dynamic. Sonatina porteña Op.28 by Gunter Parpart (b. 1928) is spiced up with modern dance flavor while Sonata by Irma Urteaga (b. 1929) is atonal in a disciplined form. Buenos Aires-born pianist Valentin Surif was trained under Tino Rossetti, Alicia de Larrocha and Earl Wild and has a number of critically acclaimed recordings including the complete Alberto Williams albums released by Naxos. His Piaggio sonata has more contrasting moods and more daring rubatos.
