Virtú Maragno was born in 1928 in Santa Fe (Argentina), in 1946 he settled in Buenos Aires to study composition with Luis Gianneo and piano with Vicente Scaramuzza and Antonio de Raco. A scholarship from the Italian government allowed him to study in Rome with Goffredo Petrassi and to learn about Bruno Maderna's work at the Institute of Phonology in Milan. Maragno was aware of the developments of electroacoustics, but his means remained the instruments and the voices. He wrote for all genres and combinations. "Expresión" (Expression), premiered in Rome in 1961, takes distance from the diatonism of his "Baladas Amrillas" (Yellow Ballads) (1952) and reveals a principle of antiphony and instrumental polyphony that the author will deepen in fundamental works such as "Ecce Homo" (premiered by Pedro Calderón in 1972) and "AMO" ( that Mario Perusso directed in 1982).

Maragno was Professor of Composition at the University of Rosario, Counterpoint and Fugue at the University of La Plata, Chamber Music and Choral Direction at the Gilardo Gilardi Conservatory, and Harmony, Counterpoint, Fugue and Orchestration at the Carlos López Buchardo Conservatories and Manuel de Falla. In 1994 he succeeded the composer Roberto Caamaño as a member of the Academy of Fine Arts. Soon after he founded the Orchestra of the Academy (with which in 1995 he premiered his Dialogues for oboe and bows, with his daughter Cecilia as a soloist).

During his last years Maragno was consecrated to the composition of the opera that the Teatro Colon had ordered him in 1991, and that was premiered on June 1, 2004 Fuego en Casabindo (Fire in Casabindo), on the novel by Héctor Tizón. Fortunately, Maragno managed to leave the score completely finished before his death.
