VAGN HOLMBOE

String Quartets Vol. 4

The Kontra Quartet

Peter Fabricius, viola

Anton Kontra, violin

Boris Samsing, violin

Morten Zeuthen, cello

About:

The spirit of folk culture plays an important role in the music of Vagn Holmboe. As was the case with Béla Bartók, folkloristic studies have here contributed significantly to the compositional process. Holmboe is the most influential Danish composer of the generation after Carl Nielsen and his large output includes twelve symphonies, chamber concertos, and a long series of extremely fine string quartets.

Reviews

"Vagn Holmboe's 20 mature string quartets comprise an extremely important and musically worthwhile 20th century contribution to the genre, worthy to stand beside those of Bartók and Shostakovich. For the modern chamber music fancier there is no more rewarding series of discs currently available, and the excellence of the performances ensures that each work makes the most favorable possible impression" (ClassicsToday) [Read full review]
