Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869)
Piano Music, Vol. 4
Philip Martin (piano)
This fourth volume brings to wider attention more pieces from the pen of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the father of American composition. With their unique spontaneity and prophetic use of native syncopated rhythms—anticipating ragtime by some 50 years—these are works of intoxicating effect and great individuality.
This volume contains one of Gottschalk's most familiar titles—Morte!!, the last complete work he performed in public. As he began the next piece, he collapsed and died three weeks later.
REPERTOIRE RECOMMANDÉ
GRAMOPHONE CRITICS' CHOICE
'Gottschalk's elegant sensuality has surely had its most gracious advocate in Philip Martin … this is Gottschalk playing at its most refined.' (International Record Review)
'Immaculately delivered, recorded and presented in every way … every track is a delight. A joy to listen to' (Gramophone)
'Played with refinement and elegance' (Classic CD)
'Maintains the high standards of playing and recording that we have come to expect' (Hi-Fi News & Record Review)
'The shining brilliance of Gottschalk is superbly captured by Martin’s wonderful pianism. This musician’s personality, intelligent, technically transparent, and subtly colored, matches those traits in Gottschalk with unerring sympathy. I can only join the chorus of critical praise for previous instalments in this series' (Fanfare, USA)
