"Emerging from Currents and Waves" is a collaboration between Nordin, Martin Fröst, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. All three are interested in how new technologies can influence art. It is our contemporary album of the week!

"What is fantastic about art and music is that you can ask questions and evoke visions at the same time." These are the words of Swedish composer Jesper Nordin, who does exactly that in "Emerging from Currents and Waves". A large-scale work for orchestra, solo clarinet, conductor, and live electronics, *Emerging from Currents and Waves* is a collaboration between Jesper Nordin, Martin Fröst, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. All three are interested in how new technologies can—and will—influence art and artistic expression, and they explore the intersection of humanity, music, and technology.

"Emerging from Currents and Waves" is in three parts, with the clarinet concerto *Emerging* at its center. In the work, the electronic and acoustic worlds meet on equal footing. The sound of the live orchestra is recorded in real time, sampled, processed, and played back through processes controlled by both the soloist and the conductor using motion sensors. The technology used for this is the Gestrument (from "gesture" and "instrument"), originally invented by Nordin as a composition tool, but here used instead as an instrument.

This recording was made during the premiere performance of the work at the Berwaldhallen in Stockholm during the 2018 Baltic Sea Festival. In concert, a visual element was added when images generated by the creation of electronic music were projected onto multiple layers of transparent fabric forming a specially designed sculpture that hovered above the orchestra.
